BATON ROUGE — LSU sophomore forward Glen Davis and freshman forward Tyrus Thomas were honored with the top awards given by the writers who cover the Southeastern Conference in voting by the Associated Press.
Davis was chosen as the Player of the Year by the panel of writers from the SEC coverage area and Thomas was chosen as the Newcomer of the Year. Both Davis and Thomas were chosen for similar honors by the coaches in their voting prior to the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
Davis was also the only unanimous choice on the first team as selected by AP with Thomas and senior Darrel Mitchell second-team selections.
Joining Davis on the first team were Ronnie Brewer of Arkansas, Joakim Noah of Florida, Ronald Steele of Alabama and Chris Lofton of Tennessee.
With Darrel Mitchell and Thomas on the second team are Jermareo Davidson of Alabama, Shan Foster of Vanderbilt, C. J. Watson of Tennessee, Charles Rhodes of Mississippi State and Taurean Green of Florida.
Selected honorable mention were: Corey Brewer, Florida; Dwayne Curtis, Mississippi; Al Horford, Florida; Tarence Kinsey, South Carolina; Jonathon Modica, Arkansas; Randolph Morris, Kentucky; and, Rajon Rondo, Kentucky, G, 6-1, So.
The choice as coach of the year was Bruce Pearl of Tennessee.
LSU opens play in the NCAA Tournament Thursday at 6:10 p.m. CST in Jacksonville, Fla., against Iona.
