ATHENS, Ga. — Freshman Julius Gloeckner shattered the school record in the men’s 400 individual medley Saturday, swimming a NCAA provisional time of 3:49.59 at the Last Chance Meet.
Gloeckner, a native of Freiburg, Germany, posted the clocking in the prelims of the event, thus solidifying his chances for a NCAA Championships berth. He overtook the previous school record by nearly two seconds set by Nate Thomson in 1995 (3:51.34). Thomson recorded it when he was a junior.
Sophomore Kevin Braud entered the weekend aiming for a time of 48.00 in the 100 backstroke. Braud swam a season-fast time of 48.49 in the finals for a “B” cut. He will have an additional shot on Sunday to improve his mark.
Another freshman enjoyed a productive night when Katie Gilmore entered the school’s all-time Top 10 in the 100 freestyle. Gilmore posted the fourth-best time in school history (50.79), wrapping up a “B” cut in the event.
Gilmore also joined senior Heather Brand and junior Colleen Bertirotti in the 50 free finals on Saturday night. Bertirotti won the consolation final in a time of 23.44, and Brand finished eighth overall (23.85). Gilmore was 10th overall with a mark of 23.59.
Earlier in the day, Bertirotti recorded her fastest time of the season in the 100 free (51.11).
Time trials continue at 9 a.m. CST Sunday from the Gabrielsen Natatorium, site of the Women’s NCAA Championships.
