BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s track and field team remained No. 5 in the Trackwire 25 rankings for a second straight week, while the Lady Tigers entered the standings tied with Oregon at No. 17.
Both the men’s and women’s polls have new No. 1’s this week.
Florida State knocked defending national champion, Arkansas, out of the top spot in the men’s standings with 59 points to the Razorbacks’ 49 points. Wisconsin (47), Texas (39) and LSU (29) round out the top five.
On the women’s side, South Carolina (65) slipped by Texas (64) for the No. 1 position. Stanford (41) comes in at No. 3 followed by Nebraska (34) and Tennessee (26). The Lady Tigers and Oregon are credited with 11 points each, sharing the No. 17 position.
Individually, LSU has 10 athletes and a pair of relay teams ranked among the Dandy Dozen, a top 12 listing of individuals and teams in each NCAA contested event.
Sophomore Xavier Carter (200 meters) and the men’s 4×400-relay team are listed at No. 1 in the country for a second straight week. Carter automatically qualified to the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 200 meters last week, winning the Lobo Invitational with a NCAA-leading time of 20.74. In addition, he teamed with Reggie Dardar, Kelly Willie and Melville Rogers to win the 4×400 relay with an additional NCAA-leading time of 3:08.01.
Also ranked for the men are seniors Kelly Willie and Darion Powell and freshman Trindon Holliday. Willie is listed at No. 3 in the 400 meters and Powell is sixth in the pentathlon. Holliday enters the individual ranks at No. 12 in the 60-meter dash.
On the women’s side, a pair of sophomores, in Kelly Baptiste and Brooklynn Morris, are ranked in both the 60 and 200-meter dashes. Baptiste is listed at No. 5 in the 200 and No. 7 in the 60, while Morris is just one spot behind her in both events coming in at No. 6 in the 200 and No. 8 in the 60 meters.
Also in the 200 meter standings is Lady Tiger junior Juanita Broaddus. She is ranked ninth this week.
Others listed among the top 12 include Jessica Ohanaja (8th, 60 hurdles), Deonna Lawrence (11th, 400 meters), Shaunette Davidson (11th, high jump) and the 4×400 relay team (11th).
Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers return to action this Thursday and Friday when they host the LSU Combined Events and the Bayou Bengal Invitational at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse. The Combined Events runs, Jan. 26-27, and the Bayou Bengal will be held on Jan. 27.
