Women’s Tennis Completes Preseason Play in Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The LSU women’s tennis team closed out play in what has been a tough Michigan Classic without recording a win Sunday and now look forward to the regular season that begins Saturday.

Despite several tough losses in this tournament, head coach Tony Minnis said there are many positives he took from the weekend play.

“We obviously didn’t get what we wanted in terms of wins,” he commented, “but I saw a lot of good things happen this weekend. For instance I got to see the competitiveness of Anastasiya (Dubova), and saw that Mykala (Hedberg) can play with some of the best.”

Dubova, who had fallen Friday and Saturday in three-set fashion, dropped her Sunday match to California’s No. 34-ranked Marion Ravelojaona, 6-3, 7-6(3).

Hedberg, a freshman for the Lady Tigers, played a good match with Cal’s No. 19 Zsuzsanna Fodor, though eventually falling, 6-2, 6-3.

Both of LSU’s doubles tandems earned losses as well, though Dubova and Hedberg came close with an 8-5 score to Georgia Tech’s Tarryn Rudman and Alison Silverio.

“We only had five of our players competing in this tournament, and I think we got a lot out of it considering,” Minnis added. “We got some tough matches in right before we start our spring season.”

The Lady Tigers’ next competition will be their regular-season opener at home Jan. 21. They take on Prairie View A&M at 9 a.m. and UL-Lafayette at 1 p.m.
