ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The LSU women’s tennis team travels to Michigan this weekend for its final tune-up before the regular season in the Michigan Classic.
The tournament, featuring four top-50 teams, begins Friday at noon and lasts through Sunday. The field includes No. 4 Georgia Tech, No. 17 California, No. 35 Michigan and No. 43 LSU.
“We’re really excited to be competing in a tournament with such quality competition right before our regular season starts,” head coach Tony Minnis said. “We’re playing to get match tough for the spring season we have coming up.”
Each school will play three rounds of doubles and three rounds of singles. Each round will consist of four doubles matches and eight singles matches.
Friday’s competition for LSU includes a singles match-up versus Michigan at 3 p.m. and a doubles meeting with Cal at 6 p.m.
Individually, Nina Yaftali of Michigan ranks at No. 48 in the nation and Debra Streifler comes in at No. 76 for the Wolverines. For Cal, the duo of Suzi Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor are ranked No. 7.
“This will be a high level of competition and a good opportunity for us heading into the spring,” Minnis added. “We’ve been working really hard and hope to play some good tennis.”
Four seniors will lead the way for the Lady Tigers. Camila Caliari, Marina Chiarelli, Daysi Espinal and Lauren Seaman will look to use their experience to help the team.
This tournament marks the final preseason match before the Lady Tigers open the regular season at home Jan. 21 in a double dual match with Prairieview A&M and UL-Lafayette.
