LSU (7-0, 1-0 SEC) also used a solid team defensive performance to extend its SEC win streak to 15 straight games. Kentucky (8-1, 0-1 SEC) scored the lowest point total in school history, while it was the second fewest points allowed by LSU in a conference game.
“I’m extremely pleased with the defensive effort,” LSU head coach Pokey Chatman said. “That was something we were looking to continue from our last outing at Ohio State. It (defense) is also something you can fall back on when you are not quite executing the way you would like to in a half.”
LSU held Kentucky to 29.2 percent shooting from the floor and forced the Wildcats into 20 turnovers.
The Wildcats took a 4-1 lead early in the game, but the Lady Tigers scored used a 9-0 run to pull away. LSU led 28-17 at the break.
Kentucky then cut it to five, 30-25, early in the second half before Chatman called a time out in attempt to slow the run. LSU then came out of the time out with a 9-0 run to retake a double figure lead, one they would keep for the remainder of the game.
Augustus connected on 11 of 20 shots from the floor for her game-high 23 points and grabbed five rebounds. Scholanda Hoston added 12 points and Florence Williams chipped in 10 points.
Sylvia Fowles pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, scored seven points and blocked four shots in the win.
Carly Ormerod led Kentucky with 14 points, including four three pointers.
LSU shot 50.0 percent from the floor and outrebounded Kentucky 34-30.
The Lady Tigers return to action on Tuesday when they host Tulane in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at 7 p.m. CST.
