Lady Tigers Complete Exhibition Play with 107-50 Win

BATON ROUGE — Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles combined for 49 points on 20-of-25 shooting, as the third-ranked LSU women’s basketball team rolled past exhibition opponent Henderson State on Monday at the Maravich Center, 107-50.

Augustus, the 2004-05 National Player of the Year, played only 20 minutes, while Fowles saw 18 minutes of action.

The Lady Tigers, 2-0 in exhibition play, takes on No. 13 Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The game will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network and in the Geaux Zone on LSUsports.net.

LSU dominated the NCAA Division II Lady Reddies from the opening tip, scoring the game’s first 11 points in 2:45.

“I am pleased with the energy level but not with the pace,” LSU head coach Pokey Chatman said. “We played too fast at times on both the defensive and offensive ends of the floor. We forced too many things.”

Despite 22 turnovers, LSU shot 69.2 percent from the field (45 of 65) and recorded 23 steals. They scored 47 points off Lady Reddies turnovers and 32 points in transition.

Playing all 11 dressed players, the Lady Tigers out-rebounded Henderson State, 48-22, and dished 25 assists.

Augustus, who only made a brief appearance in the second half, was 10 of 12 from the field for 23 points. She added five rebounds, three assists, three steals and a blocked shot to her efficient evening.

Fowles, a 6-6 sophomore center, once again dominated the paint by making 10-of-13 shots for 26 points. She pulled down six rebounds — four on the offensive end — and had five steals and a blocked shot.

Guard Quianna Chaney, who started in place of Scholanda Hoston, was the only other Lady Tiger in double figures scoring with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Guard Erica White added eight points and starting forward Florence Williams had seven.

Reserve point guard RaShonta LeBlanc had a game-high six assists, while reserve forward Ashley Thomas had a game-high nine rebounds for LSU.

The Lady Tigers made 70.6 percent of their first-half attempts (24 of 34), racing to a 60-26 lead with a 14-5 run in the final 4:08.

Henderson State made only seven shots in the first 20 minutes (29.2 percent) and committed 16 turnovers.

LSU built its lead throughout the game and used reserves for most of the second half to do so. The final score was the largest margin of the game.

With two tune-ups in the rear-view mirror, the Lady Tigers now focus on the 2005-06 regular-season opener against 13th-ranked Texas Tech on the Red Raider’s home court. LSU plays the second game of the State Farm Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 on ESPN2.
