Men’s Golf Finishes 11th at Tunica

TUNICA, Miss. — The LSU men’s golf team posted a 10-over par 298 in the final round Tuesday to finish in 11th place at the Tunica National Intercollegiate at Tunica National Golf Club with a 54-hole total of 70-over 934 in its final tournament of the fall season.

The tournament, which was hosted by Ole Miss, was forced to move from the University Club in Baton Rouge to Tunica National due to the lack of available hotel rooms in the Baton Rouge area in the wake of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Junior Chris Wells led the way for the Tigers by finishing the individual competition in a tie for 22nd with a 15-over 231, while sophomore Beck Troutman was one shot back in a tie for 31st with a 16-over 232.

Fellow sophomores Brent Struthers and Brian Noonan finished tied for 35th and 56th, respectively. Struthers fired a 2-under 70 in the final round for a total of 18-over 234, while Noonan posted a 25-over 241 in three rounds. Freshman Jarrod Barsamian finished the tournament in a tie for 58th with a 26-over 242.

Senior Aaron Smith competed as an individual in his first tournament appearance of the season and finished in a tie for 70th.

The SMU Mustangs held on to their four-stroke lead heading into the final round to capture the tournament title by two strokes over Belmont with a three-day total of 41-over 905. Edward McGlasson of Colorado claimed medalist honors by one stroke over Tulane’s Michael Thompson with a 4-over 220.

The Tigers will break for three months before returning to action in their first tournament of the spring season, Feb. 5-7, at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
