Men’s Golf Struggles on First Day at Tunica

TUNICA, Miss. — The LSU Tigers didn’t get much benefit in the venue change from the University Club to the Tunica National Golf Course here Monday as the LSU Tiger golf team stands in 13th place after 36 holes of the two-day, 54-hole tournament.

The University Club Intercollegiate was moved to Tunica and hosted by Ole Miss after the Tigers were forced to cancel their annual tournament on these dates because of the lack of facilities to host the teams because of the aftermath of the two recent Gulf hurricanes.

LSU had rounds of 317 and 319 and stands in 13th place in the 15-team field at 636, 60-over par on the par-72, 7,204-yard Tunica National layout. The Tigers are 34 shots behind leader SMU. The Mustangs had rounds of 300 and 302 to stand at 26-over par 602, four shots ahead of UAB. Kent State is third at 611 and Mississippi State, the only team to post a sub-300 team score in the first 36 holes (298 in the second round), is fourth at 613.

LSU’s Chris Wells had the best score of the day for 36 holes of nine-over 153 after rounds of 77 and 76, while Beck Troutman is one more shot back at 154 (76-78). Wells is in a group tied for 20th place and Troutman is in a tie for 25th. The Tigers had to count two rounds in the 80s in both the morning and afternoon rounds.

The individual leader, in an unusual twist, is not playing in the team competition, but only as an individual. Logan Young of Mississippi State had rounds of five-under 67 and four-over 76 to stand at one-under 143 after 36 holes. He is one-shot clear going into Tuesday’s final round of Edward McGlasson of Colorado, who had back-to-back rounds of 72 to stand at even par 144.

Tulane is in ninth place in the competition and Michael Thompson is third at 147 after rounds of 71-76.
