Men’s Golf Finishes 15th at Bank of Tennessee

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. — Senior Andrew Lanahan, junior Chris Wells and sophomore Brent Struthers each finished in a tie for 35th in the individual competition Sunday to lead the LSU men’s golf team in the final round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges Golf and Country Club.

The trio paced the Tigers to a 15th-place finish overall with a total of 8-over par 224 in three rounds, while LSU finished the event with a team total of 35-over 899. Sophomore Brian Noonan finished the day tied for 60th with a 12-over 228, while fellow sophomore Beck Troutman finished tied for 69th with a 14-over 230.

“It was a tough week for the guys this week,” said LSU head coach Chuck Winstead. “They walked six rounds of golf in the last five or six days, and maybe it caught up with them a little this weekend. We just seemed to struggle around the course and the greens. We need to put this weekend behind us and move on.”

South Carolina finished the tournament as the only team under par and captured the team title by eight shots over Southeastern Conference rival Auburn with a three-round total of 5-under 859. Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State won medalist honors by three shots over South Carolina’s Florian Fritsch with an 11-under 205, which is the second-lowest, 54-hole individual total in the tournament’s eight-year history.

The Tigers return to action in the Tunica National Intercollegiate at Tunica National Golf Club on Oct. 31. The tournament, which was originally scheduled to be played in Baton Rouge as the University Club Intercollegiate, was moved to Tunica, Miss., due to the lack of available hotel rooms in the Baton Rouge area in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

“The guys are very much looking forward to our next event,” Winstead said. “That will be a chance for them to redeem themselves and head into the winter break on a high note. It’s a chance for them to get some confidence back. We just need to put what happened behind us and move forward.”
