CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The success of Saturday wasn’t able to be sustained on Sunday by the LSU women’s golf team as a final round of 22-over 310 dropped the LSU Lady Tigers golf team back into a tie for 12th at the conclusion of the Lady Tar Heel Invitational.
The Lady Tigers had rounds of extremes, opening with 316 in the rain on Friday, followed by an 18-stroke improvement on Saturday to 298, before finishing up with a 54-hole total of 60-over 924 to tie with Tulsa for the 12th spot.
Duke put the tournament away with a nine-under par round of 279 on the final day to finish 54 holes at three-under 861, 21 shots ahead of Auburn at 18-over 882. Vanderbilt was third at 29-over 893.
Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M, who posted a seven-under 65 on Saturday, easily captured the individual title with a two-under 70 on Sunday to finish at 10-under par 206. Anna Grzebien of Duke was second at two-under 214 with Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst and Chris Brady of Vanderbilt tied for third at one-under 215.
Melissa Eaton had the best round of the day for the Lady Tigers with a three-over 75. LSU also counted a 77 from Kimberly Meck, a 78 from Rebecca Kuhn and an 80 from Nicola Eaton. Kuhn finished the best for the 54-holes with a 12-over 228, tying for 28th place. Melissa Eaton tied for 32nd, one shot back at 229.
LSU returns the action Oct. 28-30 at the SEC/ACC Challenge at Sandestin, Fla.
