BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — After day one of the Indiana Hoosier Classic, all of the Lady Tigers singles competitors are in consolation brackets heading into tomorrow’s competition, beginning with doubles at 10 a.m.
“We played some really good players today, but we just didn’t execute the way we should have against them,” head coach Tony Minnis said. “We just have to get back our focus and regroup for tomorrow.”
Mykala Hedberg, the team’s freshman who had an impressive debut last weekend in Maryland, won the only opening match for the Lady Tigers on Friday. She defeated Murray State’s Anna Lask in straight sets in the flight “A” quarterfinals.
However, she fell to Indiana’s No. 82 Sarah Batty in the semifinals, and now is set to face Kansas State’s Jessica Simosa in the third-place match Saturday.
Marina Chiarelli, also competing in flight “A”, dropped two matches Friday, first to No. 54 Brook Buck of Notre Dame and then to No. 90 Dora Vastag of Indiana.
Lauren Seaman dropped her opening match in flight “B” as well, but then fought back to defeat Ksenia Bukina of Kansas in consolation play. Daysi Espinal also won her second match over MSU’s Anne Pennington after falling in flight “E” quarterfinal play.
Tiffany Tucker fell in her first match to Notre Dame’s Kelcy Tefft in flight “C” and then was forced to withdraw from her second match due to a hip injury suffered in the first match. Minnis said, however, Tucker should be ready to go Saturday.
Singles consolation play continues Saturday, and doubles play for the tournament begins. Two Lady Tigers duos will compete.
The 60th-ranked duo of Seaman and Tucker will match up against Murray State’s Casady Pruitt and Pennington, and Chiarelli and Hedberg will battle IU’s Marah Calvo and Vastag.
“Doubles play will be a good opportunity to get back on track,” Minnis explained. “We are playing good players, so we have to execute the right way and capitalize off the opportunities we are given.”
