COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The LSU women’s tennis team continued its stellar season-opening play in day two of the Maryland Invitational, sending three singles players and one doubles tandem to the finals in their respective flights.
Senior Marina Chiarelli rolled on, still without a loss in either a singles or doubles match in the tournament. She defeated Veronika Subertova of Maryland in the flight “B” singles semifinals, 6-4, 7-5, and will square off Sunday against Washington State’s Amy Toth for the bracket’s tournament title.
She and partner Mykala Hedberg are also headed to the flight “B” doubles finals after defeating the Terrapins duo of Jennifer Dent and Subertova in the semifinals, 8-1. They will face another pair of Maryland opponents in Julia Graca and Neda Mihneva for the “B” doubles title Sunday.
Lady Tigers Anastasiya Dubova and Daysi Espinal also will play for flight titles Sunday. In flight “C”, Dubova defeated Markolein Vandeven of WSU in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. She will try for the flight’s title Sunday against Yale’s Olivia Nix.
Espinal dropped Maryland’s Juliana Naso in straight sets, 7-6(3), 7-1, and will battle Brooke Rogers, also of Maryland, for the flight “D” title.
After dropping a tough match to No. 45-ranked Ekaterina Burduli of WSU Friday, Hedberg rebounded with a win in the consolation bracket Saturday over Notre Dame’s Lauren Connelly. She will play in consolation finals against Maryland’s Maryann Baker.
