COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The LSU women’s tennis team completed the opening day of its first fall tournament Friday, coming out with six singles wins and one doubles victory to open competition.
“I think the team played pretty well,” head coach Tony Minnis said. “For this being the first real matches we have played so far, we actually played hard on most of the courts.”
In her first appearance as a Lady Tiger, freshman Mykala Hedberg earned an impressive win in the “A” flight over Jessi Robinson of Duke, 7-5, 6-2, and then fell to Ekaterina Burduli of Washington State in the following round.
In the same flight, Lauren Seaman could not grab a win, as she fell in the opening round to Duke’s Clelia Deltour and then in the consolation bracket to Notre Dame’s Kiki Stastny.
In the “B” flight, Marina Chiarelli defeated Ashley Miles of Yale to advance to the bracket’s semifinals. Tiffany Tucker lost her first match, but then beat Lauren Archer of Duke in the consolation bracket, 7-6, 7-6.
Anastasiya Dubova won both of her matches in the “C” flight, first over West Virginia’s Kelly Walsh, 6-0, 6-2, and then over Yale’s Christina Cutter, 6-4, 6-4. Daysi Espinal also picked up a win for the Lady Tigers in the “D” flight over West Virginia’s Ashley Constantine.
Hedberg looked impressive as well in doubles, as she and Chiarelli defeated Miles and Cutter from Yale, 8-2, in the “B” flight.
Seaman and Tucker fell in their first-round match, and Minnis pulled Caliari and Dubova from theirs to prevent injury.
Minnis said though there is room for improvements, overall he was pleased with the day’s results.
“There is still a lot of work to do,” he commented, “but I was really impressed with the way we played today, especially Marina and Mykala who both played a stellar match.”
