MONTREAL — LSU swimmer Heather Brand concluded the FINA World Swimming Championships over the weekend, enjoying success in five events at the prestigious event held in Montreal.
Brand, a native of Harare, Zimbabwe, opened the competition with the women’s 100-meter butterfly. On Thursday, she finished 40th in the preliminaries of the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 58.85.
The following day, Brand earned a top-30 finish in the 50-meter fly, swimming a mark of 27.83 to take 27th-place out of 69 participants. She wrapped up the weekend in the 50-meter free, placing 32nd with a final time of 26.65.
The United States won the team competition, amassing 15 gold medals and 32 overall — its largest total since 1982. Fellow countrywoman Kirsty Coventry, a standout swimmer at Auburn, joined Brand in representing Zimbabwe. Coventry was named best female of the competition winning two golds and two silvers. Australia’s Grant Hackett captured three golds and five medals in all to receive top male honors.
Brand, a team captain last season, returns for her senior season in the fall as the Tigers open the 2005-06 campaign on Oct. 21 against defending national champion Auburn at the LSU Natatorium.
