BATON ROUGE — LSU went through its final practice of the spring on Thursday leaving Saturday’s controlled scrimmage as the last workout for the Tigers before breaking camp until the fall.
Thursday’s workout at the Charles McClendon Practice Facility went just over two hours and had the Tigers focusing on a different phases of the game, including the two-minute offense as well as field goal kicking at the end of the workout.
Saturday’s scrimmage starts at 11:30 a.m. in Tiger Stadium and is open to the public. Tickets remain on sale for $5 at the LSU Ticket Office and on the Internet at www.LSUsports.net. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets before Saturday in order to avoid potentially long lines at the ticket office on the day of the scrimmage.
Heading into Saturday’s workout, first-year coach Les Miles said he’s been pleased with his team’s performance through the first 14 practices of the spring.
“We’ve gotten a lot done,” Miles said. “We’re obviously much farther ahead than when we first started. The players have done a good job. They’ve worked hard. As a staff, we’ve been able to use the spring to assess talent, while also allowing competition at many of the positions.”
Miles also complimented his staff, one that includes only two holdovers – offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher and offensive line coach Stacy Searels – from the previous coaching staff.
“I like our staff and the way that we’ve been able to interact with the players,” Miles said. “
Miles said Saturday’s scrimmage will be controlled in nature, but will include many “live” snaps for the first and second units. Miles said he expects 55 “live” snaps for the first team and close to that number for the second unit.
Miles said Saturday’s scrimmage will feature the No. 1 offense going against the No. 1 defense and the No. 2 offense facing the No. 2 defense.
“The best players are going to lineup and face the best players on the other side of the ball,” Miles said. “It gives you more of an opportunity for the players to compete evenly.
“Doing it this way is also best for the development of this team.”
