Second-Half Surge Drives Lady Tigers Past South Carolina, 66-36

COLUMBIA, S.C. — LSU’s top-ranked Lady Tigers basketball team used a 24-0 run to open the second half pulled away to a 66-36 victory over South Carolina on Sunday afternoon in the Colonial Center.

LSU (23-1, 10-0 SEC) struggled in the first half, trailing for almost four minutes, before using a 12-4 run to retake the lead and eventual took a 26-19 lead into the locker room.

South Carolina (6-18, 0-10 SEC) did not score a second-half point until the 11:37 mark and trailed 50-21 at that point after the Lady Tigers used the 24-0 run.

“This team has been able to hang their hats on the defense end with quickness of the perimeter and some size in the post,” LSU head coach Pokey Chatman said. “We regrouped at halftime and made South Carolina guard us to the likes of reversing the basketball and getting point touches.”

Seimone Augustus led LSU with 13 points, including two three-pointers. Augustus played just 26 minutes and scored five of her 13 in just six minutes in the second half. Scholanda Hoston added 11 points and two three-pointers, while Sylvia Fowles had 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

LSU shot 32.4 percent in the first half, but rebounded to hit 15 of 24 shots in the second half for 62.5 percent to finish the game at 44.8 percent from the floor. South Carolina was held to 31.3 percent from the floor, including 29.6 percent.

The Lady Tigers outrebounded the Gamecocks 38-34 and forced 28 turnovers, converting them into 26 points.

LSU returns home to face Kentucky on Thursday at 7 p.m. CST in the Maravich Center.
