Tigers Beat Bulldogs in Athens for First Time Since 1991

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Antonio Hudson scored a career-high 26 points and Louisiana State took its first win at Georgia in 14 years, beating the Bulldogs 95-79 Wednesday night.

Brandon Bass, last week’s Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, added 21 points and Darrel Mitchell had 17 for LSU. The Tigers won at Stegeman Coliseum for the first time since 1991.

Georgia, held to 47 points in each of its losses to Florida and Alabama last week, lost despite scoring its most points since a 100-69 win over Savannah State on Dec. 28.

LSU (12-6 overall, 5-2 SEC) has won six of its last seven, including three straight.

Georgia (7-11 overall, 1-7 SEC) has three straight losses since its only conference win against Vanderbilt on Jan. 22.

Channing Toney led Georgia with 18 points. Levi Stukes added 16 and Steve Newman had 14.

Hudson, held to a season-low three points in LSU’s win over Mississippi State Saturday, bounced back to top his previous high of 25 points against South Carolina on March 12, 2004.

LSU led 50-42 at halftime despite Georgia’s 7-of-11 3-point shooting.

Georgia’s first five field goals of the game were 3-pointers — four by Toney and one by Stukes. But even with the strong outside shooting, Georgia couldn’t keep pace with LSU’s better balance. The Tigers almost matched Georgia with six 3-pointers and had the inside advantage with 6-foot-8 Bass and 6-foot-9, 310-pound freshman Glen Davis.

Davis had 12 points and 11 rebounds, his sixth straight game with 10 or more rebounds.

Each team finished the game with nine 3-pointers.

An 11-0 run gave the Tigers an 18-6 lead, but Georgia stayed close with its 3-point shooting. There were five ties before Hudson scored eight of LSU’s final 12 points of the half.

LSU opened the second half with a jam by Bass, followed by a 3-pointer from Hudson.

The Tigers kept the lead in double figures most of the second half, though a three-point play by Younes Idrissi cut the deficit to seven points with 10:16 left.

LSU led by 15 or more points the last five minutes.

LSU outrebounded Georgia 36-27. Georgia, which starts three guards, had been outrebounded by an average of 42-26 in its previous four games.

Dominique Wilkins, the only Georgia player to have his jersey retired, attended the game. Wilkins now is a vice president with the Atlanta Hawks.
