BATON ROUGE — Less than two weeks before the opening of the 2005 season, the fifth-ranked LSU softball team will host an Alumni Game on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. at Tiger Park.
The game matches the 2005 Tiger squad against a team of former LSU players, including four of the Tiger’s eight former All-Americans. Admission to the game is free and open to the public.
Among the alumni that are participating in the game are former All-Americans Kristin Schmidt, LaDonia Hughes, Trena Peel and Ashlee Ducote. Schmidt was the 2004 Women’s College World Series Most Outstanding Player and is currently enrolled in LSU’s Paul Hebert Law School. Hughes played professionally with the New England Riptide in the National Pro Fastpitch league last summer, along with Peel, who was selected an All-Star with the Akron Racers.
Additionally, Julie Wiese-Hawkins and Sara Fitzgerald, who completed their eligibility last season, and former All-SEC selections Christy Connor, Erin Johnson, April Janzen and Shaunte’ Fremin will be playing. Jennie Reeves, Megann Steege and Jennifer Schuelke will also participate in the game for the alumni squad.
LSU opens the 2005 season on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas at the UNLV Desert Classic against UCF and No. 11 Washington. The Tigers will conclude tournament play against No. 22 Illinois and Louisville, which is receiving votes in the poll. LSU will begin play at home on Feb. 18 in the Tiger Classic, facing Grambling, Indiana and Southern in the three-day event.
