BATON ROUGE — The No. 23 LSU women’s tennis team (4-0, 0-0) made the most of Super Tiger Weekend, defeating in-state foes Southeastern Louisiana and Southern University by scores of 7-0, 6-0.
For the second straight week, wet courts forced delays in the matches. However, these changes did not faze the Lady Tigers.
“These girls have played their whole lives in tournaments in situations like this, so they’re used to it,” coach Tony Minnis said.
Southeastern’s squad, compromised of mostly freshmen, gave LSU some tough competition to start the day, but in the end the Lady Tigers were too much for the less experienced group.
In doubles, the Lady Tigers took all three matches to begin competition. Marina Chiarelli and Camila Caliari did not give up a point, defeating Maja Bradojic and Bonnie Philips, 8-0. Then Amanda Mang and Staten Spencer won over Zdenka Puflerova and Jana Simurkova, 8-2.
After falling behind 3-1, Lauren Seaman and Tiffany Tucker came back and beat Nina Knavs and Breda Kovac, 8-5.
The singles outing against SLU proved successful as well. Freshman Anastasiya Dubova finished her match first, defeating Maja Bradonjic, 6-2, 6-3. Tucker followed, and then Seaman clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jana Simurkova.
The Lady Tigers finished off Southern next, making it their fourth consecutive victory over in-state schools.
Because of weather concerns, the teams did not play doubles. And it was all Lady Tigers in singles play.
Caliari finished first with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jennifer Floyd followed by Spencer, who also beat her opponent, 6-0, 6-0.
Seaman beat Kelli Nabors, 6-2, 6-2, and then Daysi Espinal clinched the match by winning over Sarah Johnson, 6-1, 6-1.
These matches end a four-game homestand for the Lady Tigers. They travel to Texas next week to take on Houston and Rice.
“Southeastern came and played with a lot of intensity and fire, and I thought we played well,” Minnis said. “I’m just glad we got the win over them and Southern and I’m looking forward to Houston and Rice.”
