NASHVILLE — Sylvia Fowles scored a career-high 22 points and Seimone Augustus added 20 points to lead the second-ranked LSU Lady Tigers to a 79-68 victory over No. 17 Vanderbilt on Sunday in Memorial Gym.
With the victory, LSU (18-1, 5-0 SEC) is off the the best start in league play. Vanderbilt (13-5, 2-3 SEC) dropped its third straight game.
“For the most part our kids competed at high level,” LSU head coach Pokey Chatman said. “Coming into this building and with Vanderbilt coming off a loss we are extremely pleased with how the kids performed.”
In addition to Fowles, who scored 20 of her 22 in the second half, and Augustus, who had 16 of her 20 in the first half, LSU got 13 points from Wendlyn Jones and 11 from Scholanda Hoston.
The Lady Tigers used a 9-0 run early in the first half and took a double digit lead at 22-12 with nine minutes to play in the first and led 36-27 at the break. LSU then scored nine of the first 11 points in the second half and maintained a double figure lead the rest of the way, taking as much as a 18-point lead late in the game.
Dee Davis led the Commodores with 24 points, while Ashley Early and Carla Thomas each added 14 points.
LSU shot 57.4 percent from the floor, including 62.5 in the second half. The Lady Tigers held Vanderbilt to 39.7 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Commodores 34-33. Tillie Willis led LSU with nine boards, including seven offensive rebounds.
Temeka Johnson added nine points and seven assists to the victory. Her seven assists now give the senior 800 for her career, the third player in SEC history to reach the milestone.
LSU will have a week off before returning to action on Sunday at home against Auburn at 2 p.m. CST in the Maravich Center.
