BATON ROUGE — The LSU Soccer team was defeated by South Carolina at Eugune E. Stone III Stadium on Sunday, 2-1.

“We played hard in the first half,” said LSU co-head coach Danielle Fotopoulos. “South Carolina had a little more heart when they put that second goal in. We had some chances and we need to start finishing those chances.”

With the loss, LSU (6-11-1, 1-8-1 SEC) has now dropped it’s last six games. The Tigers are now 1-4-1 against South Carolina (8-9-1, 2-6-2 SEC). LSU was out shot by South Carolina 14-4.

Early in the first half sophomore Stacy Bishop would be taken down in the box by a South Carolina defender and LSU would be awarded a penalty kick. Bishop would knock in the penalty kick and LSU would be up 1-0 in the 12th minute.

The LSU defense would play tough, as freshman keeper Valerie Vogler would have two saves in the first half. The Tigers would keep the Gamecocks off of the board, and LSU would have a 1-0 halftime lead.

South Carolina would get on the board in the 54th minute when Sarah Lentz of South Carolina headed the ball through a group of people in front of the goal past Vogler.

The Gamecocks would score again in the 82nd minute. Courtney Cobbs of South Carolina would rip a shot from 18 yards out that would be saved by Vogler, who made an outstanding effort to make the save, but Cobbs would knock the rebound from her own shot past the Tiger defenders.

“The Gamecocks played well,” said Fotopoulos. “Our want and will to win depleted some in the second half. Their second goal was due to that. They just got to the ball first.”

LSU goalkeeper Valerie Vogler had nine saves in the game making some spectacular plays. South Carolina took eight corners in the game while LSU only had one.

The Tigers will be back next weekend as they will finish SEC play against Arkansas on Friday at 7 p.m. CST. LSU will close out the season against Southern in the Mayor’s Cup on Sunday at 1 p.m.
