STARKVILLE, Miss. — The LSU Soccer team tied Mississippi State in a very physical game at the MSU Soccer Field Sunday, 0-0.

“The girls battled and played hard,” said LSU co- head coach Danielle Fotopoulos. “We came out with a win and a tie this weekend and got points. Did we want the win? Yeah, but we battled hard and our defense was solid and we didn’t give up any goals.”

With the tie, LSU (6-5-1, 1-2-1 SEC) is now 7-2-1 all-time against Mississippi State (4-5-3, 1-2-1 SEC). The Tigers are now on a two game unbeaten streak in SEC play.

In the first half the Bulldogs would out shoot the Tigers 8-4, but there would be no goals scored. Artie Brown made a good run for the Tigers as she broke away from the Mississippi State defenders, but Emily Meyers made a good stop for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs also had numerous opportunities to score in the first half, but freshman goalkeeper Valerie Vogler came up big with five saves in the first half.

Neither team would score in the second half as both teams would make runs. Vogler had a couple impressive saves against the Bulldogs in the second half to hold Mississippi State scoreless.

In the first overtime period Stacy Bishop would rip a shot from 30 yards out that just nicked the crossbar and went over. Both teams would be held scoreless in the two overtime periods as both teams were unable to put anything together.

Vogler got her second career shutout and had eight saves in the game, while the Tiger defense dominated the Bulldogs in the two overtime periods.

“Val (Vogler) did a great job as well as Tara Mitnick who shut down their top forward,” said Fotopoulos.

The game was very physical with a total of 34 fouls and five yellow cards. The Tigers had six corners in the game to the Bulldogs nine corners.

The Tigers will be back on the road next weekend, as they will travel to Georgia on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. and Tennessee on Oct. 10 at noon.
