MEMPHIS, Tenn. — LSU men’s tennis team members Ken Skupski and Mark Growcott picked up two big wins to the doubles quarterfinal and semifinal matches to advance to Monday’s championship match in the ITA Southeast Regionals.
LSU’s other team of Danny Bryan and Jason Hazley also won its quarterfinal match, but was unable to win in the semifinals.
“It was very good to have two teams in the semifinals,” Coach Jeff Brown said. “They both were able to get some good wins this morning.”
In the quarterfinals, the tandem of Skupski and Growcott beat Georgia’s Strahinja Bobusic and Colin Purcell with an 8-5 score. They continued to roll and earned a semifinal win later in the day over Vanderbilt’s Jason Pinsky and Scott Brown, 9-7.
Bryan and Hazley’s loss in the semifinals came from Florida’s Janne Holmia and Greg Oullette. The LSU duo had fallen behind 6-1 and then brought the score to 6-5. Their comeback fell short, however, as they took an 8-6 loss. This was after a win in the quarterfinals earlier in the day over Tennessee’s Ockie Oosthuizen and Ben Rogers, 8-6.
“Ken and Mark were able to win in their semifinal match even though they didn’t play their best,” Brown said, “and Jason and Danny had a good match as well. They had a great comeback before the other team got the win.”
Skupski and Growcott move on to face the duo that defeated their teammates today. The match will be played 10 a.m. Monday.
