BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — After Lauren Seaman and Staten Spencer took the doubles title yesterday, three members of the LSU women’s tennis team picked up singles wins in the final day of the Hoosier Classic at the Outdoor Varsity Courts.
After losing her match yesterday to Missouri’s Erika Josbena, Spencer defeated Judith Diaz of Kansas State, 6-2, 6-3, to take third place in the flight D bracket.
Daysi Espinal also won her match over Indiana’s Brianna Williams, 6-2, 6-4, to win the consolation bracket in flight B competition. Tiffany Tucker was victorious over Murray State’s Jennifer Ward in her consolation match as well.
Coach Tony Minnis said this tournament helped the team get a feel for what is necessary to play against tough competition.
“We played very well,” he explained, “and were able to get players experience in higher positions, which is what we were trying to do. For example, Lauren (Seaman) and Marina (Chiarelli) played in the No. 1 slot, and Daysi (Espinal), who usually plays in the No. 6 or 7 slot, played up as well. That’s not something they are used to doing.”
After being victorious on the doubles courts yesterday, Seaman fought hard, but fell in a tough match to No. 105 Maria Rosenberg of Kansas State today.
“I am very proud of how we played, and we are gradually improving as each week goes by,” Minnis said.
The team will look to take this improvement to its next competition, the ITA Regional Championships at the Texas A&M Tennis Courts in College Station, Texas, beginning Friday, Oct. 15.
