OXFORD, Miss. — The LSU Soccer team won its first SEC game of the season as they defeated Ole Miss Friday at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium, 2-1.
LSU (6-5-0, 1-2 SEC) is now 5-4 all-time against Ole Miss (5-6-0, 1-2 SEC). LSU out shot Ole Miss 16-13, but shots on goal would be even at seven. Ole Miss had six corners in the game while the Tigers had five.
“I am very proud of the girls and their outstanding win tonight,” said LSU co-head coach Danielle Fotopoulos. ” Stacy Bishop was awesome with her two goals as well as Artie Brown with her assist.”
The Tigers would score first in the 30th minute when Stacy Bishop headed the cross from Artie Bishop into the beck of the net. LSU would not waist any time getting their second goal. In the 33rd minute Bishop would take a free kick from 20 yards out and put right past the Ole Miss goalkeeper.
The Tigers would take a 2-0 lead going into the half. LSU and Ole Miss would make runs in the second half, but the Tigers would be held scoreless in the second half.
Ole Miss would get on the board late in the game, as Lindley Beckman would score on an impressive shot from 25 yards out in the 83rd minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Valerie Vogler would get her second win of the season as the Tiger defense kept the Ole Miss offense at bay.
“Our defense did outstanding in the game,” said Fotopoulos. “Tara Mitnick did a great job of marking a very good job of marking their forwards and we just need to focus on our next game.”
The Tigers will continue action as they travel Mississippi State. LSU will play the Bulldogs Sunday at 1 p.m. The Tigers will be back on the road next weekend, as they will travel to Georgia on Oct. 8 and Tennessee on Oct. 10.
