LAS VEGAS — Daysi Espinal’s defeat of Oklahoma’s Jessica Braver in the flight three singles finals topped off the final day in the UNLV Ivitational for the LSU women’s tennis team.
Espinal won easily over Braver in two straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, to clinch her first singles title as an LSU player.
Also picking up wins in consolation brackets were Lauren Seaman over Minnesota’s Lindsay Risebrough in flight two, 6-2, 6-4, Staten Spencer over Jana Kubicikova of Oklahoma State in flight three, 6-3, 6-4, and Tiffany Tucker over UM’s Danielle Mousseau in flight four, 6-2, 6-3.
Marina Chiarelli and Amanda Mang both lost their consolation bracket games Sunday in flight one to UM’s Nischeia Reddy and OU’s Irina Lykina, respectively, as did Jenny Wooten in flight five to OU’s Christy Baxley.
Coach Tony Minnis said he is happy about the team’s overall performance, and despite some disappointing losses, it is early in the season and they can be ready with a little more work.
“Considering it was our first tournament, I think we did pretty well,” he said. “We just need to work on our match play. It’s been a long summer, and we’re coming off a few injuries, so if we just work on our match play we should be prepared for the rest of the year.”
