BATON ROUGE — The seventh-ranked LSU men’s golf team will begin play in its second tournament of the season Monday at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate in Nashville, Tenn.
The tournament will be played at the Golf Club of Tennessee, which will play to a par 71 and 6,844 yards for the championship.
Joining LSU and host Vanderbilt in the field is Alabama, UAB, Central Florida, College of Charleston, Florida State, Georgia State, Kansas State, Middle Tennessee State, Ole Miss, UNC-Wilmington, North Florida, SMU and Virginia. The Tigers come into this tournament after finishing in sixth place at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate two weeks ago.
“We looked at our stats from the first tournament and found some areas where we can improve to be more explosive in shooting lower scores,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “We will always be solid with this squad, but I want us to be able to play more consistently everyday and in every round.”
LSU will play with a lineup of seniors Heath West and Jeff Riemann, sophomores Garrett Runion and Chris Wells, and freshman Brent Struthers, who is making his first tournament appearance as a Tiger.
“Any of these guys are capable of shooting in the 60s in any given round, and they’ve shown that in practice,” said Jones. “With Brent, I expect some nerves since this is his first tournament here. We just need to keep him calm and focused because he’s got enough talent to be successful in this game.”
West and Wells are each coming off top-10 performances in the season opener, finishing in ninth place and a tie for 10th respectively. West fired a 1-under 215, and Wells was one stroke back with an even-par 216.
The Tigers will follow the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate with a trip to Lake Forest, Ill., to compete in the Windon Memorial Classic at Conway Farms Golf Club, Oct. 5-6.
