LAS VEGAS – The LSU women’s tennis team finished out day two of the UNLV Invitational at the Fertitta Tennis Complex winning a doubles flight final and advancing Daysi Espinal to Sunday’s singles finals in flight three.
Espinal defeated Cindy Treber of UNLV after Treber retired in the third set due to injury. The result of the match was 6-7, 6-1, 2-0. She will face Jessica Braver of Oklahoma in the singles finals Sunday.
Freshmen Tiffany Tucker and Staten Spencer also won their matches in their respective consolation brackets. Tucker defeated Hawaii’s Kimberly Curtis, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and Spencer won out over Samantha Capelia, 6-3, 6-0, also from UH.
The rest of LSU’s singles players did not fare as well. After an impressive win Friday over No. 72-ranked Gyorgyi Zsiros of UNLV, Marina Chiarelli fell Saturday to Hawaii’s Lauren Fitzgerald in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
Lauren Seaman also lost her flight two match to OU’s Irina Lykina, preventing her from advancing to Sunday’s finals. Losing in their consolation brackets were Amanda Mang to UH’s Lauren Fitzgerald and Jenny Wooten to UNLV’s Mery Constanti.
The Lady Tigers went 1-3 on their doubles outings for the day. The duo of Camila Caliari and Wooten took the win in flight five from OU’s Chelsea Orr and Amanda Pratzel, 8-4. Mang and Seaman lost their flight one bracket to OU’s Gabby Baker and Heather Saluri by a score of 8-5.
Tucker and Chiarelli were defeated by OU’s Lykina and Bethany Griffin, 8-2, in the flight two finals, and Espinal and Spencer lost, 8-6, to Anne Claire Ortiz-Luis and Constanti of UNLV in flight four.
Espinal will try to win her flight as the tournament resumes at 11 a.m. CST Sunday for the singles finals.
