BATON ROUGE — After a week off the Tiger and Lady Tiger cross country teams return to action Saturday, hosting the only home meet of the season, the LSU Invitational, at Highland Road Park.
The meet will begin at 8 a.m. with the women’s 6K run and will wrap up with the men’s 8K race at 9:30 a.m.
Competition will include 11 teams from throughout Louisiana and Mississippi as Tulane, UL-Lafayette, Nicholls State and Alcorn highlight the field of competitors.
“It’s always an advantage to be at home,” said LSU cross country coach Mark Elliott. “The athletes know the course well and with the performance we had in New Mexico two weeks ago I would expect for them to do very well again this weekend.”
Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers opened the season two weeks ago at the UNM Lobo Invitational, turning in solid third and fifth-place finishes, respectively.
The Tigers were led by senior Jimmy Wiggins and junior Patrick Gavin who turned in a pair of top-10 finishes.
Senior Katie Denton paced the Lady Tiger squad, finishing 11th overall while posting a PR on the UNM course.
Elliott feels both team should be well rested and ready to following the two-week lay off.
“At this point in the year its always better to get in some good training rather than race week in and week out,” said Elliott. “I think the break has allowed us to get a little more prepared and will help us to do well at home this weekend.”
Following the LSU Invitational, the Tigers and Lady Tigers will take the next two weekends off before returning to action Oct. 11 at the Auburn Invitational.
