BATON ROUGE — The LSU soccer team (4-1) lost to Ohio State (3-2) Friday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, 4-0. The Buckeyes dominated the Tigers for much of the game scoring 3 goals in the second half to extend their 1-0 halftime lead in a game where the action was mainly on the LSU side of the field.
“Ohio State did really well and I think they did a great job of attacking and playing hard. We just got tested and were physically challenged,” said LSU co-head coach Danielle Fotopoulos. “They were a strong good attacking team, and were we exposed and hopefully we will learn from this.”
The first goal of the game was scored in the 35th minute by Lisa Grub on a cross from Lara Dickenmann. Ohio State scored three goals in the second half by Danielle Dietrich in the 51st minute, Elizabeth Mumley in the 65th minute and Lara Dickenmann in the 72nd minute.
The Tigers were out shot by Ohio State 22 to 4, and of the 22 shots taken by the Buckeyes only eight were on goal while LSU only had one shot on goal. Tara Mitnick and Michelle De Cespedes both had two shots in the game. The Buckeyes also had 10 corners in the game, while LSU did not take one corner in the game.
“They dominated us and the stats showed it,” said Fotopoulos. “Our girl came out organized until that first goal, and then they kept on coming after us and coming after us. Their strength and domination was something we tried to control, but they did a great job of continuing to attack and when you keep hitting on the roof in the same spot it eventually goes in.”
LSU will take on Dayton Sunday at 11:30 a.m EST at Jessie Owens Memorial Stadium in the Tigers second game of the Buckeye Classic. The Tigers go on the road again next weekend, going to Colorado to play Wyoming and Colorado.
