AUSTIN, Texas — Torrential downpours in the Austin area caused the majority of first day action from the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships to be postponed Wednesday evening.
Prelim and qualifying rounds originally slated for today will be rescheduled throughout the next three days of competition.
“This is the first championship that I have ever been to that has been cancelled,” said LSU head coach Pat Henry. “All we can do is wait until we see a revised schedule. I trust that the NCAA will make smart decisions, but until we know what they’ve decided we can’t make any decisions on how we are going to handle the situation.”
An amended schedule of events will be posted on the NCAA website, at www.NCAAsports.com, by midnight (CT) tonight.
The high jump of the women’s heptathlon and the women’s javelin, which were underway before heavy showers halted competition, have been rescheduled for 9:45 p.m. tonight.
One running event, the women’s 4×100-meter relay, was able to be completed before the downpours began. The weather didn’t seem to effect the Lady Tigers as the foursome of Lolo Jones, Monique Hall, Stephanie Dust and Muna Lee coasted into the finals, easily winning their heat in 43.03. The time, the second-best for LSU this season, was the fastest qualifying mark of the day.
