LOS ANGELES — LSU All-American April Burkholder wrapped up a phenomenal sophomore season Saturday night at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships recording two top-10 finishes in the individual event finals at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.
“April did a great job tonight,” said LSU head coach D-D Breaux. “The competition was tough and she held her own.”
The SEC and Central Region Gymnast of the Year finished tied for fourth on the vault with Florida’s Erinn Dooley and placed eighth on the balance beam.
Having to compete two different vaults in the event finals, Burkholder notched a 9.863 on her first attempt, a yurochenko with a half-twist. She then threw a full-twisting yurochenko on her second vault and scored a 9.888 to finish with a final average of 9.875.
Burkholder then moved to the beam where she concluded a perfect season on the event, performing her 15th consecutive routine without a fall, to notch a 9.838.
