ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The 26th-ranked LSU men’s golf team shot a 15-over par 295 on Saturday in the second round of the 2004 Southeastern Conference Championship to move up one spot to ninth place entering Sunday’s final round of play at Sea Island Golf Club.
The Tigers, 10th after Friday’s first round, are at 33-over 593 for the weekend. LSU is looking to improve on its 12th-place finish last season in Sea Island. The Tigers have two top- five finishes at the SEC’s in the past four seasons.
Defending tournament champion and No. 1-ranked Florida and Georgia are tied atop the leaderboard at even-par 260. Florida shot the day’s only round of par or better on Saturday as the Gators fired a 3-under 277. Georgia, after firing an SEC Championship-record 11-under 269 in Friday’s first round, posted an 11-over 291 in round two.
Auburn is in third place at 5-over 865, 12th-ranked South Carolina is in fourth with a 15-over 575 total and Tennessee is fifth at 19-over 579. Florida teammates Matt Every and Brett Stegmaier are tied for the individual championship at 3-under par 137 as both players fired 5-under 65s on Saturday. Florida is trying to become the first team to win back-to- back SEC titles since Georgia in 2000 and 2001.
Junior Jeff Riemann led the way for the Tigers on Saturday, shooting a 1-over par 71 and is currently tied for 22nd place at 1-over 145. Senior Garrett Prather is tied for 25th place at 6-over 146 after posting a 3-over 73 on Saturday.
Junior Heath West is in a tie for 27th place at 7-over 147. West shot a 4-over 74 on Saturday. Junior Andrew Lanahan shot an 7-over 77 and is tied for 54th place at 15-over 155. Fellow junior Brandon Aydlett shot a 10-over 80 and is currently 20-over par with a 160 total.
“We just had a really rough start today and were already well over par through the first few holes, but we settled down later in the round and were only a few over par the rest of the day,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “We just need to come out tomorrow and play better and give ourselves a chance to move up.”
The third and final round begins at 8 a.m. on Sunday. LSU is paired with Alabama and Vanderbilt for the final round and will tee off at 8:50 a.m.
