Women’s Golf Finishes Seventh in Spring Season Finale

COLUMBIA, S. C. — The LSU women’s golf team held its position from the second round through the final 18 holes, finishing in seventh place in the 2004 Spring Season finale, the University of South Carolina Lady Gamecock Classic at the USC University Club.

LSU posted a 23-over 311, equaling its first-round score, in the final round to finish 54 holes at 75 over par 939, 311-317-311. North Carolina, winner of last week’s LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic, made it two straight tournament wins with a nine-shot triumph at 41-over par 905 (303-302-300). South Carolina was at plus 50, 914 (298-309-307) with Texas at 916 and Wake Forest fourth at 918.

Ashley Prange of North Carolina, also the winner a week ago in Baton Rouge, won the individual title by three shots with a 54-hole total of three-over 219 (71-74-74) over Adrienne Gautreaux of South Carolina (74-73-75) and Katie Miller of North Carolina (75-72-75) as the two tied at six-over 222. Gautreaux finished solo second in the LSU event last week behind Prange.

Vicky Meyer finished best for LSU, jumping up 13 places to 11th after starting the day in 24th with an even par round of 72. She finished at 13-over 229 (78-79-72). Melissa Eaton, one of the freshman twins from South Africa, dropped nine spots but still finished in 20th after an 80 Sunday put her at 18-over 234.

“We can put this one behind us and think about the future,” LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen said. “We will spend several weeks now getting ready to host the SEC Championships. It is going to be an exciting time and we will do everything we can to be at our best to have the best shot to be at the top of the board.”

The SEC women’s championships are set for April 16-18 at the LSU University Club in Baton Rouge.
