Lady Tiger Golf Team Set to Tee-off in Central District Classic

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s golf team, off a second place finish in the Nokia Sugar Bowl women’s golf classic in the spring opener, takes on a good field Monday and Tuesday in the Central District Classic at the River Wilderness Country Club in Parrish, Fla.

The event, hosted by Michigan State, features many of the teams in the Central District and will be a priority event for regional rankings.

Joining Michigan State and LSU in the field of 15 are Arkansas, Baylor, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU and Wisconsin. Defending champion Ohio State is now back in this year’s tournament.

LSU will have a fairly young lineup in the event with three freshmen, a sophomore and a junior in the lineup for the 54-hole tournament that features 36 holes Monday and the final round on Tuesday.

LSU will go with sophomore Vicky Meyer in the leadoff spot along with Alexis Rather, the freshman from Tupelo, Miss., in the number two position. Junior Brooke Shelton will play third and for the first time at LSU, the South African freshman twins, Melissa and Nicola Eaton.

Meyer, Rather and Shelton all had top 10 finishes in the New Orleans event at English Turn Golf and Country Club.

“We feel like this will be another good test for us,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We’ve had the chance to continue to work on things as the semester has gone on and look for continued improvement from our team.”

LSU is presently 26th in the Sagarin performance ratings.
