BATON ROUGE — The honors for LSU’s third-ranked football team continued to roll in on Tuesday as the Tigers placed two players on the Academic All- America team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced.
Rodney Reed, a senior from West Monroe, earned First Team Academic All-America honors for the second straight year, while quarterback Matt Mauck, a junior from Jasper, Ind., earned a spot on the second team.
Reed, who is the first two-time First Team Academic All-America selection in school history, graduated last May with a 3.94 grade point average in accounting. Reed is currently enrolled in graduate school and he’s expected to graduate with a Master’s degree in accounting in May.
Reed, who also earned Second Team Academic All-America honors in 2001, has started 46 straight games on the offensive line for the Tigers. In Reed’s four years with the Tigers, he’s been a part of 37 wins, four bowl appearances and the 2001 SEC Championship. He was also a member of the 2003 SEC Good Works Team.
Reed, who is a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, will be honored next week at the National Football Foundation’s Hall of Fame and Scholar-Athlete banquet, which will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City. The National Scholar-Athlete award carries with it an $18,000 post- graduate scholarship.
Mauck has passed for a school-record 27 touchdown passes this season in leading the Tigers to an 11-1 overall mark and a No. 3 national ranking. In the classroom, Mauck carries a 3.72 grade point average in kinesiology. Mauck, who will receive his Bachelor’s degree in December, plans on enrolling in dental school once his football eligibility is complete.
Mauck, who earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors on Monday, has a 16-2 mark as LSU’s starting quarterback. He currently ranks first in the SEC and 13th in the nation in pass efficiency with a 153.9 rating. In 12 games this season, Mauck has completed 202 of 314 passes for 2,550 yards and 27 touchdowns.
Reed and Mauck becomes the first LSU tandem to earn a spot on the Academic All-America teams since 1982 when James Britt and Alan Risher were both second team selections for the Tigers.
