BATON ROUGE — LSU freshman guard Khalilah Mitchell suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee in practice on Sunday and will miss the remainder of the season, it was announced by head coach Sue Gunter on Tuesday.
Mitchell, a native of New Orleans, was a key reserve for the 18th-ranked Lady Tigers (2-2) and was averaging 2.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game in 16.0 minutes per outing. She is coming off her performance of the season with six points and three steals in the 73-51 victory at Rice on Saturday.
“Khalilah is a terrific young player and this is a setback for all of us,” Gunter said. “Khalilah is a battler and she will fight her way through this. She will be OK. We will miss her, but no body will work harder to get back on the court.”
Mitchell also has a partial tear of her medial collateral ligament in her right knee and will undergo surgery to the repair the knee on Dec. 12.
She will be able to redshirt this season and return next year as a redshirt freshman after playing just four games this season.
