UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Ninth-ranked Penn State jumped out to an early 16-3 lead and never looked back en route to an 83-46 victory over the 12th-ranked LSU Lady Tigers at the Bryce Jordan Center Friday night.
“We did not have any answers for anything Penn State wanted to do,” LSU head coach Sue Gunter said. “Offensively, defensively, on the boards, in transition, they pretty much had their way. Anything we tried to do just was not good enough.”
Penn State (1-0) shot 51.6 percent from the floor and grabbed 47 rebounds in the game. LSU (1-2) managed 34.6 percent from the field and grabbed 20 rebounds.
Temeka Johnson led LSU (1-2) with 18 points, while Seimone Augustus added 12 points and a four rebounds and Doneeka Hodges chipped in with nine points and a team-high four rebounds.
“We just we never able to catch our rhythm,” Gunter added. “Penn State had a lot to do with that.”
Kelly Mazzante led the Lady Lions with 22 points and broke the Penn State scoring record with her 16th point of the game midway through the second half. Tanisha Wright added 15 points and eight rebounds for PSU.
LSU will travel to Rice for the fourth and final game a road swing to open the season next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Autry Court.
