Lady Tigers Defeat Latvian Select in Final Exhibition Game

BATON ROUGE — LSU’s 10th-ranked Lady Tigers basketball team used a 15-0 run late in the second half to pull away from the Latvian Select team en route to a 91-57 victory in exhibition play on Monday night in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

“I think what we as a coaching staff wanted to see tonight was for our kids to play a really good mental game tonight,” LSU head coach Sue Gunter said. “At some points they did. But, there are some things we are going to have to work on to get better for the week we have coming up. I have to give credit to Scholanda (Hoston) and Tillie (Willis) who really fought hard on the boards tonight.”

Hoston and Willis each collected double doubles to lead the Lady Tigers, who posted a perfect 2-0 mark in exhibition games. Hoston poured in 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Willis had 13 points and 11 boards. Seimone Augustus led way with a game-high 20 points on 10 of 15 shooting from the floor.

Doneeka Hodges added 11 points and Florence Williams chipped in with 10 in a game that saw all 10 Lady Tigers that dressed for the game score at least two points.

Latvian Select hung with LSU for much of the first half and got within 24-21 with 11:03 left to play before the half, but the Lady Tigers finished the half on a 21-10 run, including a 15-0 run.

LSU outrebounded Latvia 55-43 and shot 43.2 percent from the floor. Latvia hit 33.3 percent from the floor for the game, including 6 of 20 from 3-point range.

The Lady Tigers open the regular season Saturday against Villanova at 6 p.m. CST in the opening game of the Women’s Sports Foundation Tip-off Classic hosted by the University of Oregon in Eugene.
