TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The LSU women’s golf team, looking for the consistency it never found a year ago, placed three golfers in the individual top 10 in taking home third place in the first tournament of the season, the University of Alabama/Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate at the Capstone Clue here Monday.
LSU finished the rain-shortened 36-hole event with a score of 617, 41-over par. The Lady Tigers were one shot out of second place and seven shots from the winning score of 34-over 610 posted by Florida State. Mississippi State was second at 616. After LSU it was five shots back to host Alabama at 622.
Senior Devon Day had her best finish at LSU, tying for sixth place at nine-over par 153 (76-77), while sophomore Vicky Meyer (who had LSU’s only top 10 finish a year ago), and freshman Alexis Rather (playing in her first collegiate event), both finished in a tie for eighth place in the final individual standings with a 10-over par 154. Meyer shot the team low round Tuesday of three-over 75 on the rain-soaked course after a 79 on Sunday, while Rather shot duplicate rounds of 77.
Junior Brooke Shelton shot rounds of 76-82 – 158 to finish in a tie for 14th place.
“We didn’t putt very well (in the final round),” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We had about 12 three putts that cost us, but we learned a lot from this first tournament and to have three of the players in the top 10 is a nice start for us. We are going to continue to work hard and get ready for our next event which will have a very tough field at New Mexico State.”
The Lady Tigers are back in action, Oct. 6-8, at the Price’s Give “Em Five Invitational in Las Cruces, N. M.
