BATON ROUGE — The LSU coaching staff has named four Tigers as the team’s players of the week following the 49-7 season opening win over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday in Tiger Stadium.
Michael Clayton, a junior from Baton Rouge, earned the team’s offensive player of the week honor after catching six passes for a career-high 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Clayton scored on receptions on 66 and 40 yards. Clayton, who has caught at least one pass in all 27 games of his career, also added 17 yards rushing to lead the Tigers with 169 all-purpose yards.
With the two TD receptions, Clayton ran his career total to 13, which ranks as the ninth-highest mark in school history.
Jack Hunt, a senior from Ruston, La., was named the defensive player of the week after posting a team-high nine tackles. Hunt also returned an interception 31 yards for his first career touchdown.
Shyrone Carey, a junior from New Orleans, and Gino Giambelluca, a sophomore from New Orleans, shared the special teams award. Carey returned four punts 82 yards, including a long of 33 yards, while Giambelluca had a pair of tackles kickoff coverage.
