Former Tiger Brew Wins Relay Gold at IAAF World’s

PARIS — Former LSU track All-American Derrick Brew won gold Sunday at the IAAF World Championships, running the third leg on the United States’ championship 4×400-meter relay team.

Brew joined with fellow Americans Calvin Harrison, Tyree Washington and Jerome Young to clock an impressive time of 2:58.88 to edge out France, who crossed the line in 2:58.96.

Also finishing in the medal count Sunday was former Lady Tiger Ronetta Smith. Running for her native country of Jamaica, Smith won bronze as a member of the 4×400-meter relay team. Smith teamed with Sandie Richards, Allison Beckford and Lorraine Fenton to turn in a season-best effort of 3:22.97.

The United States won the women’s 4×400 with a world-leading mark of 3:22.63, while Russia followed in second with a time of 3:22.91.

On Saturday, LSU had two other former athletes turn in solid performances at the World Championships, but finish out of the medal count. Walter Davis recorded a seventh-place finish in the men’s long jump (26-3 3/4), while Laverne Eve placed eighth in the women’s javelin (195-6).
