Bishop Leads Soccer to Record-Setting Win, 12-0

BATON ROUGE — The LSU soccer team set numerous records on Sunday afternoon en route to a 12-0 win over the Jackson State Tigers in the final match of the Tiger Classic I at the soggy LSU Soccer Complex.

“It was a good game for us to build some of the confidence of some of our new attacking players, so hopefully that gave them an idea of what we are looking for in the future,” said LSU head coach George Fotopoulos. “With Stacy Bishop and Michelle De Cespedes getting a few goals, I think that will help us down the road and make us a little bit better of a team.”

The Tigers scored a school-record 12 goals, including 10 in the second half, also a school record, and ran their winning streak against non-conference opponents to 10 games.

Freshman forward Stacy Bishop scored a school-record five goals, breaking the previous record of four accomplished by former Tiger Mandy Heintz. Bishop, a native of Land O’Lakes, Fla., also assisted teammate Stephanie Keating on the game-winning goal on Friday versus Coastal Carolina in a 2-1 win.

LSU recorded 30 points in the game, good for second all-time in school history. LSU also did not allow JSU to take a shot during the game and recorded their first shutout of the season. In all, the Tigers set three school records.

Fellow freshmen Michelle De Cespedes and Joleen Phillips each scored two goals of their own and sophomore Christine Haman scored the first goal of her career. Junior forward Artie Brown scored a goal for the second-straight game, the 14th of her career, and sophomore Kate Ripple added her first goal. The Tigers outshot Jackson State 33-0 and recorded 14 shots on goal.

Coastal Carolina defeated UL-Lafayette 1-0 in the earlier game on Sunday as Laura Weiler scored her second goal of the weekend.

LSU will play host to McNeese State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Baton Rouge for their next contest. The Tigers have never lost to an in-state opponent under Fotopoulos, and are 3-1 all-time against the Cowboys.
