Keating’s Header Gives Tigers 89th-Minute Win, 2-1

BATON ROUGE — LSU midfielder Stephanie Keating headed in the game-winning goal in the 89th minute, as the LSU soccer team opened the season with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Coastal Carolina on Friday evening in game two of the Tiger Classic I at the LSU Soccer Complex.

The Tigers outshot the Chanticleers of the Big South, 21-8, but could not pull out the victory until Keating took a short pass from true freshman Stacy Bishop and headed it into the left corner of the net with just 1:23 remaining on the clock.

Junior forward Artie Brown gave the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage with an unassisted goal in the 11th minute. The goal was Brown’s 14th of her career, which puts her fifth on the Tigers’ all-time list.

The Chanticleers’ Roberta Parsons tied the score in the 56th minute on an assisted goal from Laura Weiler.

The Tigers improved to 1-0 on the season while the Chanticleers fell to 0-1. LSU will face Jackson State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the first meeting between the two schools. Coastal Carolina will square off with UL-Lafayette on Sunday at 11 a.m.

UL-Lafayette defeated Jackson State, 10-0, in the first game of the Tiger Classic I earlier in the afternoon.
