BATON ROUGE — Monday marked the final day of two-a-day practice sessions for the LSU football team as the Tigers began to taper down their practices.
LSU worked out for just over two hours on Monday morning with another session slated for later that night. LSU will practice once on Tuesday followed by the last scrimmage of fall camp on Wednesday in Tiger Stadium. The Tigers will then take Thursday before getting started on Louisiana-Monroe preparations on Friday.
“We have had three or four good practices in a row,” LSU coach Nick Saban said after the Monday morning workout. “I am really pleased with the effort of the players. Today was one of the toughest days for us, but the team is making good progress. I think a lot of players have improved a great deal since the last scrimmage.”
Saban singled out the wide receivers and running back Joseph Addai as players who have continued to improve with each practice during camp.
“Devery Henderson is getting a little healthier and Skyler Green is doing some good things,” Saban said. “Bennie Brazell is having a good camp, so I think our receivers are coming together. Joseph Addai has had a really good camp at running back and I think the quarterback situation continues to make progress.”
Saban added that freshman wide receiver Amp Hill underwent surgery last Friday to re-attach his medial collateral ligament and posterior cruciate ligament. Hill is not expected to be back at full speed for another three months.
“We are going to coach him and try to get him ready to be a good player when he gets back,” Saban said of Hill’s injury. “He is very disappointed, but he certainly has taken a positive attitude into re-establishing his goals to be a starter next year.”
Saban also reported that freshman wide receiver Craig Davis will miss the next couple of weeks of practice after dislocating his elbow last week diving for a ball in practice.
In other news, defensive back Vernon Russell and defensive lineman Tory Collins have both left the team. Russell is expected to transfer to another school in the state, while Saban was unsure of Collins’ plans.
