SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Several track and field athletes with LSU ties turned in impressive performances at the Pan-American Games Thursday evening.

Leading the way was LSU volunteer assistant coach Kim Kreiner. Kreiner won the women’s javelin competition en route to setting a new United States record in the event. Kreiner’s toss of 199-8 bettered the previous U.S. record of 199-1, also set by Kreiner in 2001.

Also medaling in the women’s javelin was former Lady Tiger Laverne Eve. Eve, an NCAA champion and current school record holder in the event, earned runner-up honors with her throw of 191-1.

Running the women’s 400 meters was current Lady Tiger Hazelann Regis. Regis easily advanced to the finals in the event, winning her semifinal heat with a time of 52.31.

On the men’s side, Alleyne Francique also advanced to the 400-meter finals, posting the fastest semifinal time of the three-heat field (45.31). Francique was a two-time NCAA champion while competing for the Tigers, winning the indoor 400 meter title in 2002 and running a leg on the Tigers’ national championship 4×400-meter team in 2001.

In other international action, quarter-miler Derrick Brew had an outstanding showing at the DN Galan in Stockholm, Sweden. Brew, a four-time All-American for the Tigers, won the open quarter with a time of 45.28.
