ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada — Lady Tigers Neisha Bernard-Thomas and Hazelann Regis led a solid contingent of current and former LSU track athletes that turned in gold medal winning performances at the XIX Central American and Caribbean Senior Track and Field Championships over the weekend.
Competing for their home country of Grenada, Regis and Bernard-Thomas took home gold in the 400 and 800 meters, respectively. Regis, a four-time All-American for the Lady Tigers in 2003, easily outdistanced the field in the open quarter, finishing nearly a full second faster then the nearest competitor (51.56), while Bernard-Thomas, the NCAA runner-up in the outdoor 800 meters, was victorious clocking a time of 2:04.12.
LSU also had three former athletes top the field in their respective events as three-time NCAA champion, Suzette Lee, won the triple jump (45-7), national champion Alleyne Francique won the 400 meters (45.27) and Eve LeVerne, the Lady Tigers’ school record holder in the javelin, finished on top with a throw of 186-2.
Another former LSU athlete who also enjoyed success at the championships, was three-time NCAA champion, Daphine Saunders. Saunders finished fourth in the triple jump (38-9 1/2) and fifth in the long jump (20-6 1/2).
