BATON ROUGE — LSU football player Rodney Reed, men’s basketball player Brian Green, women’s golfer Devon Day and women’s track and field athlete Candice Gonzalez headlined the list of award winners at the Cox Communications Academic Excellence Gala held Sunday on the LSU campus.
In all, 158 LSU student-athletes were recognized for their placement on the SEC Academic Honor, while 186 students earned a spot on the LSU Director’s Cup, which is presented to those who have maintained a 3.0 gpa over the last academic year.
Reed, Green, Day and Gonzalez received the Wally Pontiff, Jr. Academic Excellence Award, which is awarded to the student-athletes who are in at least their third year at LSU and have the highest cumulative grade point average among all student-athletes. The award is named for the Tiger baseball star that died last summer of a heart abnormality.
Day, a junior on the Lady Tiger golf team, has a 4.0 gpa in journalism. She’s a two-time recipient of the LSU Director’s Cup and has been named to the Dean’s List as well as the Chancellor’s Honor Roll every semester she has attended LSU. Day is also a two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma, the national student-athlete honor society.
Gonzalez, a member of the LSU’s national champion women’s track and field squad, has a 3.97 gpa in kinesiology with a concentration on human movement science. She’s a three-time recipient of the LSU Director’s Cup and the SEC Academic Honor Roll. On the field, Gonzalez, an All-SEC selection as a junior, is the school-record holder in the 20-pound weight throw as well as the hammer throw.
Green, a four-year member of the LSU men’s basketball team, has a 3.9 gpa in biology. Green is a three-time recipient of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and the LSU Director’s Cup. He’s been named to the Dean’s List as well as the Chancellor’s Honor Roll, while also being a member of several national honor societies.
Reed, a three-year starter for LSU’s nationally-ranked football team, has a 3.94 gpa in accounting. Reed, a First Team Academic All-America in 2002 after being a second team selection in 2001, has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll three times. He’s also a three-year recipient of the LSU Director’s Cup. Reed will graduate with honors in May.
In addition to the four recipients of the Wally Pontiff, Jr., Academic Excellence Award, LSU’s Collis Temple III and Bradie James were recognized for their efforts in the classroom and on the playing field.
Temple, a three-year starter on the LSU men’s basketball team, is the only student-athlete in LSU history to complete both his undergraduate and graduate degree and pursue a doctoral degree while still participating in a sport. Temple received his bachelor’s degree in general business in only three years, and then added a master of science degree in Kinesiology this past December.
James, a First Team All-America linebacker and a possible first round draft pick in the NFL Draft later this month, was named one of only six Division I-A recipients of the National Scholar-Athlete Award in 2002. The award, which is presented by the National Football Foundation, comes with an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship.
The LSU men’s golf team was singled out for having the highest grade point average among men’s teams at LSU with a 3.4 gpa, while the volleyball and women’s golf teams tied for the highest gpa among the women’s sports with a 3.42 average.
