TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The LSU men’s golf team shot a 15-over par 299 on Sunday to finish in 11th place at the Conrad Rehling Alabama Spring Invitational at the Capstone Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The Tigers finished at 50-over par 902, 45 strokes behind tournament champion Auburn, who shot a 5-over 857. Host Alabama placed second at 13-over par 865. Southeastern Louisiana finished third at 15-over 867, Kentucky placed fourth at 18-over 870, and Illinois finished fifth at 22-over 874.
James Lepp of Illinois claimed medalist honors as the top individual by shooting a 2-under par 211. James Mundy and Will Claxton of Auburn, as well as Illinois’ Patrick Nagle each tied for second place at 1-under 212. Southeastern Louisiana’s Steven Tiley and Kentucky’s John Holmes tied for fifth place at even-par 213.
Sophomore and Alabama native Heath West tied for 30th place at 10-over par 223, LSU’s top finisher. West fired a 1-under 70 in Sunday’s final round. Senior John Humphries shot a 6-over 77 Sunday to tie for 42nd place at 12-over 225. Freshman David Aitchison tied for 45th place at 13-over 226 and Aaron Smith shot a 17-over 230. Brandon Aydlett finished 60th at 18-over 231.
“We just shot way too many doubles and triples today and that is the bottom line,” said LSU head coach Greg Jones. “We need to get some more consistent rounds to be more successful.”
LSU will next participate in the Schenkel/E-Z-Go Invitational March 22-23 in Statesboro, Ga.
